Riders in the storm – Døgnvill Burger Tjuvholmen

Riders in the storm – Døgnvill Burger Tjuvholmen

The wind was already howling when we stepped outside. Thomas’ work trip to Bergen had just been cancelled, Nina was still tired from last night, and the whole day had felt heavy. We needed comfort food. Urgently. Nina also had a meeting with the Norwegian Club in Côte d’Azur at six, so it had to be quick.

And the storm? Just a little warning of what’s coming. Life on Tjuvholmen – our tiny island community at the edge of the Oslofjord – isn’t always as glamorous as the real estate brochures claim. VG shouted about “the strongest autumn storm in 25 years”, meteorologists painted the map red and orange, and the government told us to charge everything – power, phones, internet could go dark. Perfect backdrop for… a burger run.

Inside Døgnvill Burger Tjuvholmen, things looked equally dramatic. Lamps dangled from recycled Heinz Baked Beans tins, punky DIY meets comfort dining.

On the table came the maple sirup-glazed peanuts with bacon first. Sweet, salty, smoky – and honestly a bargain. In any regular bar you’d pay the same for plain peanuts, here they’d actually made an effort. Glazed in syrup, tossed with bacon – snack luxury.

But we had burgers coming, so we played it smart. Just a taste or two, and the rest were carefully wrapped in a napkin and smuggled home. Midnight snack sorted.

Burgers:

  • Nina went for the Mushroom Melt – an season burger containing chantarell, porcini, gouda, parmesan ++ A proper feast, and just what we needed.

  • Thomas went all in with Rampete Ruth – a spicy, bold, a proper troublemaker with parma ham, fried zuccini, delicious cheddar and tomato aioli. Foodie heaven.

Of course, nothing is ever simple. Fries had to be added on the side, and when it came to the slaw ee had a full-on moment:

👉 “I fought the slaw… and the slaw won.”

Still, Thomas managed to order without looking at the menu. The waitress – with just the right mix of humor and charm – kept the whole thing playful. She seemed slightly impressed. Or maybe just amused. Either way, she made the ordering part of the fun.

We laughed, we over-ordered, and for a moment forgot about Amy, the storm of the decade rolling our way. Comfort food does that to you.

Nina, ever thoughtful, saved a few bites of her Mushroom Melt, wrapped them carefully in a napkin and brought them home for Cæsar, our beloved Labrador. Thomas, on the other hand, ate every single crumb of his Rampete Ruth. Some storms you face with generosity, others you conquer bite by bite.

And the verdict? Our stomachs declared it top quality. Two burgers, two personalities: Nina’s Mushroom Melt with its natural woodland notes, like a taste of autumn gathered straight from the forest. Thomas’s Rampete Ruth – bold, extravagant, a little cheeky, and utterly delicious.

A storm outside, but inside: comfort, laughter, and burgers worth remembering.
